Assertive Kids helped to clean up the woodland trails in Royal Oaks. Over ten large contractor bags of trash were removed. Much of the trash consisted of empty bottles and cans. Sometimes, we also came across empty food containers.
Clove Lakes Park has been called Staten Island’s Central Park. It’s not without some truth. Like Central Park, Clove Lakes Park was created by the hands of humans, and not nature. Trees, shrubs, and flowers were carefully chosen and placed in various locations, just like Central Park.
Clove Lakes is a gem among our “Island of Parks.” It is unfortunate that visitors feel it’s acceptable to throw their trash on the ground. If you bring a drink, please carry the container to a trash receptacle; true, if there were more garbage cans, people would litter less, but carrying your drink bottle a few hundred feet is no gargantuan task.
Please do your part. The difference between an area covered with litter and the same area free of extraneous garbage is immense. All it takes is a little bit of effort, not much at all.
